“Thais” was the only pup in her litter, whelped January 16, 1970. She was therefore very socialized at an early age. She was a red fawn, 24 inches tall and 112 pounds. She did show well but always managed to cut her foot or pull a nail or similar tragedy just after entries closed so she went to very few shows. It was decided to concentrate on breeding her rather than showing her. That turned out to be an excellent idea as she was a wonderful brood bitch. Her pups were big and strong and she was happiest when she was caring for a litter. Thais loved carrying things in her mouth. She had a compulsion to bring something to you when she came to you. If she were called, she would frantically search for a leaf or twig or even a stone to carry to you. She simply could not arrive without a gift. She had one other compulsion which, thank heavens, only lasted until her first litter was born. She ate garden hoses! She actually didn’t eat them, she chewed foot long sections out of them and then brought them as gifts. Nothing would convince her to stop until she had her first litter and she just quit the behavior on her own (nine garden hoses later). She needed a Cesarean section for her fourth litter. Although she had been in excellent health, her heart stopped on the operating table and nothing done would bring her back. The exceptional circumstance is that she seemed to know beforehand. She loved the vet’s office and never looked back when being taken into the back room. On this day as she got to the door, she turned, dragged the assistant back to me and gave me a big licking kiss. She never licked people. She was five years and one month old.
