Bullmastiff longevity Project
As the chair of the ABA Health & Research committee, I am embarking on a new Longevity Project for our breed! I am very excited about this and hope you will be too! I believe too many of our dogs are dying prematurely, and unless we acknowledge and address this problem, it will not improve. I need your support and participation for this project to be of benefit.
My goals are twofold:
1.) Public availability of the age at death of individual ROM dogs.
These dogs are the cornerstones of our breed and this information is invaluable for breeders and buyers. Currently we have many health clearance results (hips, elbows, heart) available through OFA. I feel longevity should be considered just as important. This information is now currently being incorporated on the ROM website. The information will be listed as either owner/breeder "reported" or "documented" via veterinary records or approved publications.
2.) A collection of health data that can later be analyzed. This information will NOT be available publicly.
This will help us identify the most common cause(s) of death of Bullmastiffs, particularly those less than 7 years of age. Once identified, we can then allot our H&R dollars to better understand, and hopefully manage, these diseases. I hope this information can also be used to determine if there are any longevity-related associations with other factors, such as COI or environmental influences.
Member participation is crucial for this project to benefit our breed!
Information from any and all past Bullmastiffs is appreciated!
Please take the time to fill this information out for the interest of our breed’s future.
