Teddy was a handsome pup I sold to a nice couple in Northern California who wanted a showdog. As much as I admired him I did have three males on the property and felt that was enough. Two years later the couple divorced and the husband asked if I would find a home for Teddy as he just didn't have enough time available to be fair to the dog. I bought the dog and he was delivered to me at a show. Seeing him was a bit of a shock. He was as lean and fit as a racehorse, had no idea whether he wanted to go left or right or forward and could drool beyond anything imaginable. My handler had had me enter him in two shows before he arrived and I was hesitant to even show him the dog. Teddy had been obedience trained but had no clue as to what a show ring was. Six days later he went best of breed in his first show. By his third show he had taken breed over specials and had taken a 3rd in the working group. He was still the busiest dog I had seen in years and one of the most powerful. He had exceptional reach and drive, a blood red coat, a stunning head, and ATTITUDE. He had a look in his eye that was so sure of himself and so powerful it is rare to see. If I would change one thing about him it would be to correct his depth of brisket. It took a long time to get the ideal depth. Teddy took an immediate connection with his handler Ron. They adored each other so I let Ted live with Ron as they were at shows every week. Teddy finished his championship in 9 shows. By the end of the year he was in the top 10 rankings of Bullmastiffs even though he didn't start his career as a special until the end of September.

In 2001 he went to the National Specialty for the first time and took Best of Breed under conditions of tremendous heat and humidity in an outdoor ring. He finished as number 1 Bullmastiff All Systems. He has a heart as big as his body and just doesn't understand quitting under any circumstances. He repeated his #1 status in 2003. That was made clear by the fact that in January of 2002 on a trip to a big show circuit in Portland, Oregon, the airline cargo crew dropped him taking him off the plane and broke his elbow. Ron and I were both devastated. Not Ted, he hobbled around the hotel, ate his dinner as if nothing happened and spent his time consoling us. Three days later he was operated on by a specialist in Washington State and two days later he came home for rehab. That was no fun because he still was not admitting that he had a problem and keeping him still for 6 weeks was worse than keeping up with 2 year old triplets. He went back to Ron for the last two weeks of rehab when he had to be road worked. At the end of the two weeks he was enthusiastically back in the ring and won the working group on his first outing. He was out of commission for 9 weeks and still became the number 2 Bullmastiff All Systems.

In 2003 he won Best of Breed at Westminster KC, Best of Breed at the National, and Best of Breed at the Eukanuba Classic. He retired in February of 2004 after again winning Best of Breed at Westminster KC. That night I gave his AKC registration papers to Ron. There was no way I could separate the two. It is now 2007 and Ted is still with Ron, going to every show when they take their rig. He naps on his own bed in the trailer. He turned 9 in April of this year. He’s a little calmer but that sparkle is still in his eyes. If given the chance he’d head right for the ring at every show. He is totally retired and letting his offspring take their place in the limelight. A more noble, brave and exceptional dog would be hard to find.
