“Bits” was one of the bitches with whom we began our breeding program.  She gave us wonderful size and soundness, admirable intelligence and a sense of humor!  Al­though she lacks width of skull and muzzle, and is more undershot than I would like, com­bined with our English import dog, and his offspring, she produced puppies of quality far beyond our hopes for such an early stage in our breeding program.  Bits was a fantastic mother.  She was happy to foster babies rejected by other mothers.  I remember placing the seventeenth puppy on her once, having carefully rubbed it on Bit’s own babies.  She looked knowingly at me and said “If you think you’re fooling me, you can guess again.  If you need me, just tell me, I’ll take the baby”.  Bits has retired to a second career of guard­ing an emu farm.  Her formidable appearance and common sense are living proof that our breed is indeed a working breed.
