Tuck
By Marc BernattiMy first litter was a close line breeding and produced 7 gorgeous puppies. Having finished my first show dog, Gwen, I wanted the next Bullmastiff to be a show male out of her breeding. Tuck was the fifth puppy to arrive. My youngest son picked him out almost immediately. I had my eye on him and two other red males. However, puppy #5 just came out ahead every time the three were evaluated and compared. So, I had to agree with my son, something he still likes to remind me of. I registered that gorgeous dark red puppy as Merlgwen’s Redernred Tuck. While Tuck may not be a flashy call name, my first pick of Friar Tuck or Friar for short would sound too much like a name for poultry.
Although his name wasn’t flashy, he sure was a show stopper. As a puppy, our first venture out to a show site, Perry, GA, earned him many complements and two on the spot offers to purchase him. Once we started showing, he went on to win a number of Best of Breeds and earned his AKC Championship just after turning 1 year of age. Eleven months later, at age 2, he earned his Canadian Championship. Tuck was a nearly square structured dog at around 135 pounds. His bite was great, checked out OFA “Good” and passed his other health clearances. He is DNA registered. Tuck’s greatest attributes were the attention getting deep red coat and an excellent temperament. He loved everyone and exercised his top dog status, at home and when out, by a confident attitude.
Of the 7 litters he produced, the first and last are especially notable, because they were at home Merlgwen litters with multiple Champions. That first litter had 3 AKC Champions; one of those also attained her Canadian Championship. His last litter produced two AKC Champions.
Unfortunately, he passed away just before that last litter whelped, just 3 months shy of his own 10th birthday. Merlgwen’s Redernred Tuck was a fantastic ambassador for our Breed and is sadly missed by his family. Tuck carries on through his offspring. You can just look for that signature red; a red which he continued to throw. Since he was collected, this color will continue to flourish in future generations. So that many may experience that sweet disposition in those offspring.
