Her name can be found generations back in virtually all of the pedigrees of the Bullmastiffs that have figured in our breeding program. “Hecuba’s” initial show and breeding career was not very promising. Until she was 16 months of age, she was unsuccessful in the show ring. We were so discouraged that we decided to show her one more time at the Worchester County Kennel Club Show and retire her to the couch if she did not win.
Needless to say, at this show she went Best of Breed over a Best in Show winning Bullmastiff and by two years of age she had finished her Championship. When Hecuba was a little over a year she developed a serious case of hyperplastic endometritis. Her first two breedings did not take. Finally at three years, her uterus had recovered enough for her to conceive and she whelped a litter of 15 puppies with 12 survivors. She had a total of three litters and produced three ROM Champion bitches: Ch. Blackslates Masked Marvel (sire: Ch. Wedgewood Valhalla), Ch. Blackslate’s Golden Brandy (sire: Ch. Nutiket Mister Smudge) and Ch. Blackslate’s Diditagain (sire: Ch. Tauralan Vic Torious). Hecuba died at the age of 13. She was a fawn bitch, with a black mask and ears with a scissor bite, 24 inches at the shoulder and 110 pounds. Perhaps her most outstanding characteristic was her temperament. She was the sweetest and most patient dog anyone could ask for.
