At nine years of age Shayla still runs circles around the young ones. She came to me at 13 months, a blonde bombshell, full of energy. She would race across the yard and leap into my arms and we would both go down with a thump! A little gray around the muzzle and a little more dignity in her bearing are the only signs of her age. She is a clear light fawn with very black mask, compact and muscular. She is truly fearless, yet not aggressive, having true Bullmastiff temperment
She has produced a Best in Show winner and three Speciality winners, the most notable being “Keeper” who won the American Bullmastiff Speciality in 1993 and the Canadian National Speciality in 1992, as well as Best in Show. “Memphis” has also done exceptionally well, winning BOS and BPIS at the Canadian National Speciality in 1991 and BOW and an Award of Merit at the National Speciality in 1992. Shayla had two American National Awards of Merit offspring that year, the other being “Levi”.
Shayla was bred three times, twice to the same male. Her first two litters produced some particularly outstanding males, “Chuck”, “Keeper” and Levi, who are still being used at stud today. Her third breeding was to “Freddy”. This breeding made a great contribution to our kennel in producing “Merlin” and “Memphis”, who carried her dam’s strengths into the future. Four generation down I am still seeing her characteristics coming through. All of her offspring are alive, with the youngest turning five in January. It would appear that one of her gifts to her puppies has been good health and longevity. I expect to see her race around the property for a few more years yet, keeping those young ones in shape and in their place.
