Smiles and Grins! Every time I think of this boy, I smile. I remember at C-section Liam came out squalling and I was grinning. Once he began walking and was into everything, he would play until he was pooped and then come over, crawl into my lap and snuggle; I grinned. When Scott and Gerald chose Liam, I grinned. I knew Liam had chosen them just as much as they had chosen him. Liam possesses a love of life much like his mother, Babe. This sparkle is one of the qualities people always remember about him.
Liam’s rock-solid temperament gave him the emotional stability to take on the world and show his heart out, month after month. His structure gave him the soundness and endurance to make it to the top. His owners and handlers believed in him and accompanied him to the lofty ranks of multiple Best in Shows, a win at Westminster and multiple National Specialty wins. Indeed, Liam is one of only a few Bullmastiffs who have achieved the Triple Crown by winning an All Breed Best in Show, Westminster and the National Speciality all in the same calender year. Additionally, Liam is one of only two Best in Show winning Bullmastiffs who also holds a working title. I could go on for pages about his show career, but the purpose of the ROM is different.
Liam rocketed to Gold Register of Merit in one and a half years. This is due to his propensity to pass along his wonderful temperament. He also offers a delightful headpiece that we see in many of his get. Judges who admire Liam say they can spot his sons and daughters in the ring. He passes on a shoulder lay-back and balance of angles that give him the reach and drive that have secured him his spot in history. These were inherited from his father, Ted (Am/Can CH Bastion’s Ruff Rider O’Waters CD OA), who was an exceptionally fluid mover with unbelievable reach and drive. Liam’s squareness and level top line are icing on the cake. Liam looked at the Group and Best in Show Rings as if he were a kid in a candy store!
When out-crossed, Liam produces lovely get that are sound of mind and body. He is a line-bred dog himself and has been consistent in passing on his structure, temperament and headpiece to his get. One of his first litters was a line-breeding by Bob and I. This produced six champions and six working titles out of a litter of seven. He has children who are Sweepstakes winners at both regional and national specialty shows. Many of his daughters have gone on to be foundation bitches for people whom we hope will be the future breeders and guardians of the breed.
Liam now enjoys the comforts of home. Being retired from the rigors of day-in and day-out showing, he still enjoys a romp in the ring on special occasions. Gerald has taken Liam on to a Rally Novice title. There are few things in life which have brought me as much pride, happiness and grins as has this fine Bullmastiff. The addition of this shining star to our line and lives will keep me smiling for many, many years.
