CH Avonlea Storybook Goodfella (Sampson) (Ch. Allstar’s Mugsy Malone x Banstock Paige of Shady Oak), born on April 7, 1994, was an extremely typey, beautiful moving dog. Sampson was a balanced, very substantial, heavy boned dog that weighed about 130 pounds, stood 25 inches. Sam was a deep red dog, with heavy pigment, and although some might have thought his head style to be overdone, he passed on his particular type to many of his offspring. He was not just a typey dog; he also had one of the best set of shoulders of any Bullmastiff I have ever known. His ability to move was outstanding, with tremendous reach and drive, maintaining a level rock-solid topline, another trait he passed on to many of his get. He also had beautiful feet and pasterns, was moderately angulated, with tremendous heavy hams. His accomplishments in the show ring are many, including BOB at Westminster KC, BOB at the 1998 National, 6 specialty wins, 60 total group placements (including 21 Group I’s), and 6 all breed bests in show. He was #1 Bullmastiff in 1997 in breed and group points, national rated in both systems in 1998 and 1999. He was a bit of a ham in the ring, and was always wagging his tail or trying to “shake hands” with his friends. Sampson was a sweet, jolly dog, never dog aggressive, but protective of his home and family, always looking to please. He regularly passed all his health screenings -- with Penn Hip, clear eyes, normal thyroid. Sampson tragically died young at age 6 of hemolytic anemia, a non-hereditary rather rare auto-immune disease.
